Contrails

An original score for Google AI's film on whether artificial intelligence can make flying sustainable. Six minutes of science that could never sound like a lecture.

An aircraft contrail across a blue sky

The brief from Google was a long-form film about contrails, the thin clouds aircraft leave behind, and the research into whether AI could route flights to avoid making them. Six minutes of atmospheric science, interviews and data.

The music needed to do two things at once: keep a non-specialist watching, and never oversell a story that’s still being written. We built a score that moves between a human, close-mic’d palette for the interviews and a wider, cooler space for the sky, with a single recurring motif that resolves only at the end, when the film does.
